Fabric Obsession

I am excited today to have received a lovely parcel of fabrics I ordered from www.quilterscloth.co.uk I have no idea what I am going to do with them, I don't even like to sew, but I just had to buy them for inspiration.

We have sunshine here in Hertfordshire today, I hope that you do too!

Barbie Sticker

I worked at a sticker supply company in December and here are some of my Barbie range which I worked on while there. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture but it gives you a general idea. Licensed character work is another part of my business, designing product with licensed characters from style guides.

Welcome

Firstly I'd like to say a big HELLO & WELCOME to my new readers and followers, I have been looking at some of your websites and blogs and have been very inspired!

Today I have been on a 'Power of Momentum' course run by a local life coach who is a friend of mine. It made me realise what is important in my life and has given me the drive to change a few things. Even though I love my work and need to work because I don't have any financial support from elsewhere, today made me realise that I need to take more time for myself, family & friends and it reminded me of a great little story that I have up in my studio at all times. This is it, I hope that you like it:

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

"Not very long," answered the Mexican.

"But then why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American.

The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs...I have a full life."

The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and then a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open up your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City or Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge enterprise."

"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.

"Perhaps twenty years," replied the American.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? That's when it gets really interesting" answered the American laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And then after that?"

"After that", concluded the American, "you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny fishing village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta, and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying the company of your wife and friends."

Casual Networking

I run a small networking group in Hertfordshire and we are meeting tomorrow, if you fancy coming along then the details are below, it'd be great to welcome new businesses:

Casual networking does exactly what it says on the tin.... I know some small businesses are nervous about networking and so I wanted to organise something less formal to what you usually find.

Basically we meet up and chat with other new and small businesses, rather than a more formal networking where you may need to give a brief ‘elevator pitch’ style talk of your company, this event will just be in a local bar or pub.

Casual groups are a good way to ease yourself in to networking if you’re shy or nervous, as you’re not going to be put on the spot to describe your services in front of bunch of experienced pitchers – it’s more a case of having a chat about what you do with a few people within the group.

The next one will be from 18.00 at Cinnabar Cafe in Stevenage Old Town on Weds 24th March. They offer light lunches and pastries if you'd like to eat whilst there and obviously the usual bar drinks and hot drinks are on sale too - they also have wi-fi access too for those who may need it.

Cost £3.50.

Feel free to bring other people along who may be interested in Casual Networking.

Any questions please mail me.

Stampin' Up

I went to Stitch & Craft at Olympia on Saturday to get some inspiration. Unfortunately I didn't come across a great deal that inspired me, apart from a great little company called Beyond-fabrics, unfortunately their website doesn't do the little stand I saw justice, but they do have a shop in Columbia Road, London, which I'm sure I'll be checking out in the future.

I also came across an American company who has bought stamping parties/workshops to peoples homes, A Stampin' Up! workshop is a crafting event where you open your home and invite your friends to enjoy an exciting demonstration provided by a Stampin' Up! demonstrator. When you host a workshop, you'll see new project ideas, learn different stamping techniques, and have fun with people you enjoy. I love the idea and I'm very tempted to have one, I just need to find enough local crafty friends interested in coming.

Check out: http://www2.stampinup.com for further information.

Moo cards

Today I received a new set of Moo cards which I use as a mini portfolio to show my surface pattern designs. Aren't they great! I have been using moo for over two years now, but I still love the way that they are a different size to other business cards and the best thing is that you can print a different image on every card!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Bunny Ears

I am working late to try to come up with a promo to send out to my clients for Easter, sweet things always go down well, so I think it may be mini eggs or something similar. I kept procrastinating and so figured if I wore some bunny ears that I bought for my nephew, it may help. It probably didn't have anything to do with it, more that I am more creative at night time, but it worked. Here is a piccie of me in my studio with Abes bunny ears. I know... you are probably thinking I am mad - that's what comes of working on your own every day!

I will post a pic of the made up promo pieces once they have been made... it could be a few days!

Penguin finds

Hi Guys

I hope that you had a good weekend, I have been without internet for most of it, which has been so frustrating! I rely on it so much.

Anyway, whilst I have a current picture of Tinas penguins up I thought I'd show you some of my other gorgeous finds. I love penguins if they are cute enough and I'm known for my signature penguin Pengi (see above). I also came across this adorable penguin necklace on Etsy at LisasArtEndeavors. Here is the link if you'd like to take a further look at her collection:

Tina MacNaughton Childrens Illustrator

As promised, here is the question & answer with Tina and one more of her beautiful illustrations.

How did you know you wanted to work in design/illustration?
I was always drawing as a kid and when I went to a careers evening at school when I was 14 I found out there were actual jobs in art I was delighted. The fact I could get a job doing something I enjoyed was so exciting my mind was made up after that.

Design books/blogs/websites you can’t live without?: The Writers and Artist's Year book by A&C Black it has stacks of advice and contact info, a bible for the freelancer. The websites I need most is the Association of illustrators, Public Lending Right where you register all your published books and get 5p every time someone takes your book out of the library works out to be a tidy little sum. Also ALCS Authors Licensing and Collecting Society and also DACS Designers and Artists Collecting society both these organisation collect fees from schools, universities, colleges, libraries etc to allow people to photocopy work from books, magazines, photos, designs etc and the distribute to all those whom have made a claim.

What are the inspirations/ influences for your work?

There are so many that I could not pick one or even three but illustrators whose work I love would be Alan Lee, Raymond Briggs, Helen Craig, John Butler to name a few. It is good to be inspired by other people's work but it is also important to carve your own path too.

The future, what are your next plans?

Start my own blog, find other ways to earn money without too much effort, for example selling prints and look out for exciting projects that are new and challenging.

Do you have any advice for wannabe illustrators out there?

Work hard. If you pitch for a job and they ask for 1 or 2 ideas give them 5 or 6. You can never have too much work. Do your research, make lists, go to exhibitions or trade fairs to see clients all under one roof (yay!), read books on copyright, see above websites for workshops and advice, design a letter head and business card for yourself that represents you, make up a packs (25+) of colour samples (prints not originals) that is easy to make but is clear, neat and professional then target agents and clients that you think your work would fit in well with. Keep on doing this until you get positive feedback. Expect it to take 2-3 years before you have a semi descent income therefore be careful with your money and/or do a part time job to top up your salary. Swot up on tax and contract law because you will need it to defend your rights and income. Be organised, dedicate an area in your home that is sacred to your work. Demand support from family and friends and tell any doubting Thomas's that it is possible to make a good living out of freelancing.

Ahhhh! I have just got back from a relaxing reflexology session, a lovely lady in Stondon Bedfordshire called Jan of JD Holistics, she does lots of other lovely treatments too including Indian Head Massage & Reiki.

Also here are a few more of Tina MacNaughtons illustrations and tomorrow I will be featuring a brief question and answer session with her which could prove to be valuable to any aspiring illustrator or freelance designer. Watch this space!

Compass Life Coaching

Hi, I hope that you all had a good weekend.

Today (amongst other things) I have been working on a leaflet for local Life Coach - Julie Foster. She is running a half day workshop in Bedfordshire on 'The Power Of Momentum' which will equip the delegates with the tools they need to fulfill their goals. I will be attending. If you are local and fancy it, then it'd be great to see you there.

Tina Macnaughton

One of my bestest friends in the whole wide world is Childrens Illustrator Tina MacNaughton. She is know for her soft pastel & realistic style and particularly loves drawing animals. She is constantly busy illustrating Childrens books, including amongst many others, for Little Tiger Press, see her website for more info: http://www.tina-macnaughton.com

Over the next few days I will be showcasing some of her gorgeous work.

You never know, one day (fingers crossed) I may even get a book dedicated to me, I am one of her biggest fans! and have been for over 10 years when we used to work together.

A day of meetings

The pattern comp has now closed, thanks to those who voted for me! :-) (Heather I voted for you too!)

It's been a bit hectic here for me today, I have been out at meetings in Surrey & Hampshire and rather typically loads of work has all come in at once! not that I am complaining, but I may not get much chance to blog over the next few days.

In the meantime, here is one of my logos which has just been applied to a clients car. Maxine Tricker is a local (Herts, UK) Garden Designer, her website will be live soon, so I'll post a link when that is ready.
